Lagos CP Warns Officers Against Brutality, Extortion, Unlawful Arrests

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has warned officers against brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests and detention, stressing that misconduct will attract disciplinary action and that supervisory officers will be held accountable for the behaviour of their personnel.

Fatai gave the warning on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during a lecture for officers and men of the Lagos State Police Command at the POWA Hall, GRA, Ikeja, in compliance with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The lecture brought together area commanders, divisional police officers, tactical commanders, heads of departments and other personnel to reinforce professionalism, discipline, respect for human rights and accountability in policing.

The CP specifically warned tactical teams against extortion, brutality, intimidation, incivility towards members of the public and other dishonest practices. He directed their commanders to ensure that officers exercised restraint and respected citizens’ rights while carrying out their duties.

He also ordered personnel to comply strictly with the Nigeria Police Force’s Social Media Policy, warning that inappropriate online conduct capable of undermining the Force’s image would attract sanctions for erring officers and their responsible supervisors.

On the fight against cultism, Fatai urged officers to intensify efforts while ensuring that arrests complied with the law and due process. He prohibited arrest by proxy and the detention of individuals without lawful justification.

He further directed officers to protect the lives and welfare of suspects in custody, maintain close supervision of detainees and ensure their humane treatment throughout detention.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the commissioner charged officers to remain neutral and professional, closely monitor electioneering campaigns and provide adequate security to maintain peace and public order.

He also urged personnel to keep abreast of local and international developments and emerging security threats, while improving their professional capacity and vigilance.

Fatai said officers must earn public trust through integrity, responsible conduct, impartial enforcement of the law and respect for the rights of every citizen.
