The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, KLT Area Command, has commissioned a modern block of classrooms at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, under its Customs Cares corporate social responsibility initiative.
The facility, unveiled on February 11, 2026, comprises fully furnished classrooms, a borehole, water closets, a well-equipped library, and an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre, reinforcing the Service’s commitment to education, rehabilitation and community development.
The project was initiated by the former Customs Area Controller, now Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Eghosa Joy Edelduok, who described the intervention as a strategic effort to use education as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
She commended the Comptroller-General of Customs and other stakeholders for their support in bringing the project to fruition.
Following her promotion and redeployment, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Bolaji Lukman Adigun, sustained the project and ensured its completion.
He noted that the facility would provide inmates with learning opportunities and practical skills, highlighting the importance of continuity and teamwork in public service.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, reaffirmed that under the Customs Cares initiative, the Service will continue to implement impactful interventions in education, health, water provision and literacy.
He described the project as a practical demonstration of Customs’ commitment to going beyond its statutory mandate of trade facilitation and border security to promote social inclusion and community transformation.
Representing the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Deputy Comptroller-General Amos Kupan commended the initiative, stating that the facility would significantly enhance educational and vocational training programmes within the custodial centre and support rehabilitation efforts.
The Comptroller-General of Customs formally commissioned the facility and toured the project site, reiterating the Service’s dedication to sustainable development and nation-building through strategic partnerships and community-focused interventions.
