Comptroller Afeni Vows Sustained Crackdown on Smugglers in Ogun Axis

The Acting Area Controller of Ogun 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller OO Afeni, has pledged a relentless onslaught against smugglers and economic saboteurs operating within the command’s jurisdiction.

Afeni gave the assurance on Thursday, February 19, 2026, while receiving the leadership of the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners during a courtesy visit to the Command.

Comptroller Afeni called for stronger collaboration between the Customs Service and the maritime media, assuring stakeholders of intensified enforcement operations across vulnerable border points.

He stated that despite operational challenges and skirmishes recorded in some communities in January, the Command had sustained intelligence driven operations against economic saboteurs.

Afeni disclosed that in less than two months of his assumption of office, the Command intercepted over 7,000 parcels of cannabis which have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, while more than 6,000 additional parcels are awaiting transfer.

He described the seizures as evidence of the Command’s strengthened intelligence gathering and enforcement capacity.

On community engagement, the Acting Controller noted that the Customs Service continues to undertake Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, including the provision of educational and healthcare facilities in host communities.

While describing journalists as dependable allies, Afeni urged media practitioners to uphold genuine and verifiable reporting, adding that the Command remains open to constructive criticism.

Speaking during the visit, President of CONMMEP, Udo Onyeka, expressed confidence in the capacity of the Acting Controller and his team to curb smuggling activities and bring perpetrators to justice.

In his vote of thanks, former CONMMEP President, Tunde Umar-Daniah, also commended Afeni and his team for their patriotism and professionalism, expressing optimism that the Acting Controller would exceed expectations in his current role.
