IBILE OIL AND GAS CORPORATION (IOGC) VISITS LASU

….inspects possible location for IOGC Project

A team from the IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC) has visited Lagos State University, LASU to discuss the proposal of IOGC to build a filling station for the retail of Petrol, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) within the University premises and inspect possible location for the proposed filling station.

The University Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. FANU, while receiving the team on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, fnli, NPOM, expressed the Vice Chancellor’s gratitude to the team for finding Lagos State University suitable for the landmark project.

Mr. FANU received the team in his office on the 5th floor of Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of IOGC, Mr. Tayo Gbajumo, in his remarks, stated that the Corporation was established in 2013 by the Lagos State House of Assembly to ensure energy security in the State and commenced full operations in 2016.

According to him, the Corporation has ten (10) retail filling stations and five (5) gas stations across the State.
 
Mr. Gbajumo expressed excitement at the prospect of partnering with Lagos State University in building a refueling, conversion and training Centre within the premises of the University which he believes will be beneficial to students and staff of the University, and will increase employment opportunities for residents of the State in line with the vision of the Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola *Sanwo-Olu*.

While speaking, a former Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State/Project Consultant, Mr. Ladi Lawanson, informed the meeting that the initial plan of the IOGC was to build a petrol station only, but, the Corporation has also decided to build a Centre of Excellence which will serve as a one-stop centre for training with state of the art equipment.

He noted that the Corporation will collaborate with Lagos State University as a potential technical partner through the Faculty of Engineering to develop a training centre for mechanical and electrical engineering students as well as a centre for the conversion of petrol fuelled vehicles to gas fuelled vehicles.

The Director, Lagos State University Ventures, Prof. Oluwatosin B. Adu, described the proposed project as a laudable one, which will definitely be of immense value to the university, as the training centre will enable students to develop necessary skills needed in their academic pursuit.

After the meeting, the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. FANU led the delegation to two possible locations for the project, which are the Red Gate, by the LAGOS HOMS staff quarters and open space beside the banking arena behind the Lagos State University Bakery.

LASUSBAS: NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS HAVE NO REASON TO FAIL -VC

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, has told the newly admitted students of the Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS, that the provided facilities at the School are designed to support their success during the one-year program.

She gave the assurance while speaking at the 2023/2024 Orientation Programme of the School held on Wednesday, 17th January 2024, at the LASUSBAS Campus, in Topo, Badagry.

Prof. Olatunji- Bello expressed confidence in the resources available at the campus, saying the students have access to the best human and material resources for their academic journey.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the support of the teaching and non-teaching staff, who will not only impart knowledge and morals, but also provide guidance and direction as mentors.

“With everything that we have made available, I am bold to say that you have no excuse for failure. My prayer is that you all will succeed.”

While addressing the over 800 A’level students, the Vice Chancellor, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo assured them they are in for quality teaching and learning experience that would prepare them for direct entry into the Nigeria’s best State University.

She said, “At LASU, we are driven by excellence, and we floated this programme to assist admission seekers like you to become grounded in the A-Level programme, as a prelude to your admission into the undergraduate programme. Without a doubt, you will be receiving world-class education that can help you to stand on your feet wherever you go from here.”

Speaking earlier in the programme, the Director, Prof. Yunus Dauda, averred that the JUPEB Programme (now called LASUSBAS) was established to give opportunity to students seeking admission to 200 level after the successful completion of their one year of extensive programme.

He thanked the VC for extending the focus of the programme in 2022 to cover other advanced courses and for the support that her administration has given the programme over the period.

Prof. Dauda highlighted the VC’s achievements on the campus to include payment of the JUPEB students Examination fees, construction of 150 seat CBT Centre, renovation of Aradagun Hostel and the provision of 150 and 50KVA generators, transportation facility for students, promotion and training of staff and the provision of a new ambulance for the health centre, among others.

The orientation programme featured a cultural dance performance by the Akere Ogu Dance Group, enlightening lectures from relevant centres and departments in the university whose services they would be patronising throughout their stay including the Guidance and Counseling, Gender Based Violence and Sexual Harassment, Security, Health, Bursary and Sporting Services, among others.

Isale Eko Descendants Union salutes veteran actor Jide Kosoko at 70

The Isale Eko Descendants Union, IDU, has joyously extended warm wishes and congratulations to the iconic Nigerian actor, Prince Jide Kosoko, as he celebrates his remarkable 70th birthday.

UNILAG DEBUNKS HOODLUMS ATTACK, CLARIFIES INCIDENT ON GRADUATION GOWNS

The University of Lagos, UNILAG has debunked certain online reports claiming that the University was attacked by hoodlums on Monday, January 15, 2024.

In a statement released to news men, the Institution’s Communications Unit clarified that the incident that occured at the University on the said date had to do with crowd control during the release of academic gowns to graduating students of the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) ahead their convocation ceremony on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

The statement noted that during the incident, some yet-to-be-issued gowns were taken, and the vehicle where the gowns were kept and being distributed from was damaged.

It said the incident is currently being investigated to ascertain its cause, culpable individuals, level of damage, and to prevent a recurrence .

“We appreciate our esteemed stakeholders for their concern, and plead with the general public to disregard wild narratives trailing the incident” the statement added.

LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS ON STRATEGY TO COMBAT VANDALISM, THEFT OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

To curtail the menace of public infrastructure vandalism and theft, the Lagos State government has held a one-day stakeholders meeting to strategize and collaborate on implementing effective preventive measures.

The stakeholders’ engagement, held at the Lagos State Energy Academy, GRA Ikeja, brought together state and non-state actors to address the challenges collaboratively.

Addressing participants at the event, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye stated that the security of public infrastructure stands as one of the most urgent concerns in the state given the relentless onslaught of brazen vandals who persistently wreak havoc on our critical assets.

According to him, “considering the indispensable role of public infrastructure in the economic prosperity, social development, and overall functionality of society, the act of vandalism has a profound repercussions in everyone’s life”.

Acknowledging the devastating effect of the unpatriotic act, the Commissioner noted that the organized crime is disrupting the opportunities that government investments in modern infrastructure could provide the citizens.

Emphasizing on the relevant of constructive dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders towards reducing the vulnerability of infrastructure to theft and vandalism, Mr. Biodun revealed that a key strategic priority to securing the assets is the enhancement of security measures and response mechanism.

“While we recognize the importance of fortifying security measures, concerted efforts among pertinent stakeholders, including government agencies, law enforcement institutions, energy industry players, and community leaders, are indispensable in ensuring that individuals engaged in the vandalization of public assets are held accountable through legal consequences”, he revealed.

Noting that the endeavor of safeguarding our collective asset is beyond the responsibility of security agencies, the Commissioner pointed out that the fight against the scourge of vandalism and theft is a patriotic effort that every member of society must engage in.

The administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu according to him is unwaveringly committed to collaborating closely with relevant authorities, and deploy all necessary resources to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators of the criminal act.

“As we join forces to combat this menace, government will intensify awareness campaign to highlight the importance of safe infrastructure and state severe consequences of vandalism. It is imperative that all stakeholders, including civil society organizations, non-governmental institutions, local governments, community leaders, youth groups, and other progressive entities, join us in this campaign”, he remarked.

Earlier in her Welcome Address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Sholabomi Sasore, described the abuse of public infrastructure as a direct threat to the state’s progress and development.

“The vulnerabilities of these infrastructure are not merely technical; they extend into the realms of physical theft, social instability, and environmental challenges. We therefore must confront these multifaceted issues collectively, as a united front against the forces that seek to compromise government’s effort”, she maintained.

The Permanent Secretary who revealed that the ever-evolving challenges to the security of public infrastructure requires a united purpose and innovative solutions, expressed that the creation of a fortified network of support will not only secures but also lays the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

The Chairman House Committee on Energy and Minerals Resources, Hon. Oluwa Sabur, acknowledged the strategic importance of assembling critical stakeholders to discuss models of addressing the safeguarding of the state’s critical assets.

Emphasizing the essential role of public facilities in the prosperity and progress of the state, Hon. Oluwa urged all stakeholders to support government initiatives towards nipping the menace in the bud.

AMODU CONGRATULATES GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU ON SUPREME COURT’S VICTORY

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Housing, Hon.Ayodeji Ejalonibu Amodu has hailed the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the Governor’s victory in the 2023 Lagos state governorship election .

He said the apex court judgement which acknowledge the earlier verdicts of the tribunal and the appeal courts on the case has restored the people’s confidence in the judiciary.

In a statement signed in Lagos, the Senior Special Assistant on Housing described as overwhelming the victory of Governor Sanwo-Olu during the 2023 election, saying that the Supreme Court has proved that the people’s mandate freely given to APC at the poll could not be stolen.

The judiciary, he said, has demonstrated its determination to once again protect the nation’s democracy from being hijacked by anti-democratic forces who were rejected by the people at the poll.

The statement reads :

“By the judgement, the Supreme Court has shown to the whole world to be above board and that they remain the last hope of the common man.During the course of the judicial process, we were optimistic and have faith in the apex court to affirm the earlier judgment of the tribunal and appeal court

“ The results of the last election as declared by INEC confirmed one thing ; the acceptability of the APC in Lagos State and the the believe of the developmental projects of our dear Governor Sanwo-Olu”.


While congratulating the people of Lagos State for their support to the governor since inauguration in May 29 2023, he expressed optimism that the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu would remain committed to the welfare of the masses.

” I once again congratulate our Amiable Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, his Deputy Dr kadiri Obafemi Hamzat and the APC in Lagos State, i wish them the very best as they continue to serve their state and country.

AFCON2023 OPENER: Super Eagles Play Out Draw With Equatorial Guinea

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been held to a 1-1 draw by the Elephants of Equatorial Guinea on Sunday in their opening 2023 AFCON match in Cote D Ivoire.

The Jose Pesiro side came into the match with African Footballer of The Year, Victor Osimhen leading the attack.

Despite injuries to Victor Boniface, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Sadiq Umar, they began the match in a spritely manner with Victor Oshimhen in the 4th-minute shooting wide after a mistake from Equatorial Guinea’s keeper.

The team kept the momentum going and the Napoli forward came close again after the opposition goalkeeper parried a low shot but the linesman raised the flag to rule him off.

The Elephants maintained their discipline at the back and stunned Nigeria in the 37th-minute courtesy of Iban Salvador, who calmly found the back of the net with a brilliant finish.

Super Eagles reacted almost immediately after Alex Iwobi found Osimhen with a cross to level the match.

Nigeria will now play Cote D Ivoire on the eighteenth of January.

LAWMA Rolls Out Additional Toll-free Number For Effective Service Delivery

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has rolled out an additional dedicated toll-free number, 08000LAWMA, (08000052962) to streamline communication and improve residents’ accessibility to the organisation’s waste management services.

Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the launch of the new toll-free number was meant to expand available communication channels with the public, for enhanced operational activities, towards a more efficient and comprehensive waste disposal solutions for Lagosians.

In a statement by LAWMA’s Director, Public Affairs, Kadiri Folashade, Gbadegesin said, “At LAWMA, we recognise the critical role that communication plays in effective waste management. By introducing this additional toll-free number, we are removing barriers and making it easier for residents to report issues, request services, and stay informed about LAWMA’s activities.”

Gbadegesin stated that the 080000LAWMA line would connect callers directly with dedicated representatives, trained to address a range of waste-related concerns, adding that residents could report illegal dumping, request waste collection, inquire about PSP operations, and access information on LAWMA’s various services.

He noted that, beyond enhanced communication, LAWMA was also doubling down on its core operational services, which included strengthened PSP partnerships, enhanced marine waste services, prioritising healthcare waste, tackling market waste, among others, to optimise waste management across the state.

The LAWMA boss admonished residents to imbibe the culture of proper waste containerisation and disposal, which he said, would help shield people from diverse contagious diseases.

PROFESSOR NURUDEEN ADEKUNLE RAJI WINS RE-ELECTION AS DEAN, FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, LASU-EPE CAMPUS

The Lagos State University, LASU has announced the re-election of Prof. Nurudeen Adekunle Raji as the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Epe Campus, Lagos.

Prof. Raji, whose first term in office came to an end on Thursday, 24th November 2023, was granted  a three extension by the management with effect from 25th November, 2023 to 24th February 2024. 

This was to enable him to supervise the November/December, 2023 NUC Accreditation Exercise and the forthcoming February, 2024 COREN Accreditation Exercise.

In a statement by the Faculty Officer, Mr. Samuel T. Whesu the re-election of Prof. Raji was in line with the approval of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

Mr. Whesu who equally served as the returning officer, added that  Professor Raji’s second term of another two (2) years will commence on 25th of February 2024.
