The Ogun State Police Command has defended its handling of an alleged rape case in Ijebu-Ode, dismissing claims of professional misconduct raised by civil society groups while announcing a fresh probe into the allegations.
In a statement issued in response to a petition titled “Urgent Petition to All Well-Meaning Nigerians” submitted by the Safer Society for Children Foundation and the Elegant Nurses Forum, the Command maintained that its officers conducted the investigation with “the highest level of professionalism.”
According to the Police, four suspects, identified as Kalu Prosper, Oche Destiny, Adamu Paul, and Adewusi Qudus, have already been charged to court, with the matter now before the judiciary.
The Command rejected allegations that the victim was exposed to harm or humiliation during the process, insisting that all investigative procedures, including medical examinations, evidence gathering, and documentation, were properly followed.
“The victim’s safety, dignity, and rights were prioritised throughout the investigation,” the statement said, countering claims by the petitioners that the police failed in their duty of care.
Despite its defence, the Police said the Commissioner of Police has ordered an internal review of the issues raised in the petition, stressing that the Command remains open to credible evidence and will take decisive action if any misconduct is established.
The Police also called on members of the public to provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations, reiterating its commitment to justice, transparency, and public trust.
The Command assured that updates on the case would be communicated as proceedings continue.
