Power Minister Assures Nigerians of Gradual Electricity Restoration Within 72 Hours

The Federal Government expects electricity supply to begin improving within 48 to 72 hours as it tackles generation shortfalls, gas supply constraints and damage to critical transmission infrastructure affecting parts of the country.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance in a statement on November 6, 2026, addressing recent electricity disruptions affecting households and businesses, including in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.

Tegbe said the disruptions were caused by planned maintenance at Egbin Power Station, gas supply constraints affecting some thermal power plants and the sabotage of critical electricity transmission infrastructure.

He explained that the challenges had significantly reduced electricity available for distribution through the national grid, forcing operators to implement load shedding in some locations to manage the shortfall.

According to the minister, damage to key transmission lines had further complicated supply by restricting alternative routes for delivering electricity to affected communities, particularly in Lagos.

Acknowledging the impact of the outages on households, commercial operations and businesses, Tegbe said the ministry was working with relevant operators across the electricity value chain to address the challenges and restore supply in phases.

“I am aware of the strain that the current outages have placed on households and businesses,” he said.

The minister added that the first affected generating units were expected to return to service within 48 to 72 hours of his November 6 update.

He said the government was also intensifying efforts to improve gas availability to thermal power plants and accelerate repairs to damaged transmission infrastructure.

Tegbe stressed that restoring electricity required coordinated interventions across generation, gas supply and transmission to ensure that recovered generating capacity could reach consumers.

He appealed for patience and understanding from affected Nigerians, promising further updates as restoration progresses.

The Ministry of Power reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to resolve the immediate supply constraints and improve electricity delivery.
