The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA has honoured two long-serving marine professionals, Prince Gbadamosi Hakeem and Captain Shakirudeen Lamidi, following their retirement after 35 years of service in the Lagos State Civil Service.
The two retirees were recognised for their contributions to marine operations, waterways safety and the development of personnel in Lagos State’s water transportation sector.
Hakeem, a former Marine Operations Supervisor at LASWA, was responsible for overseeing fleet operations, including the maintenance, deployment and operational readiness of the Authority’s boats.
He also supervised captains and deckhands operating across the state’s waterways and contributed to strengthening operational and safety standards within the Authority.
Known as “Number 1” among members of his team, Hakeem was also credited with mentoring younger marine personnel and helping to develop a new generation of boat captains and other waterways professionals.
He began his public service career with the defunct Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA, where he brought decades of experience in marine operations to the Authority.
Lamidi, a senior boat captain and seasoned mariner, also began his career with the Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA in 2008.
During his years of service, he was recognised for his navigational expertise, professionalism and commitment to waterways safety.
His experience of the changing nature of water transportation in Lagos, coupled with his knowledge of the state’s waterways, enabled him to play a role in the training and mentorship of younger captains.
LASWA said the careers of both retirees reflected the importance of experience and institutional knowledge in sustaining safe and efficient water transportation.
The Authority commended Hakeem and Lamidi for their discipline, dedication and years of service, while acknowledging their contributions to the development of its marine operations.
LASWA wished the retirees good health, fulfilment and happiness as they begin life after active service.
