Zenith Bank Widens Lead with Strong Q1 Performance, Pan-African Expansion

Zenith Bank Plc has reinforced its position as one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, combining strong first-quarter 2026 financial performance with major regional expansion and international recognition that underscore its growing influence across Africa.

The bank posted a profit before tax of ₦361 billion in the three months ended March 31, 2026, representing a 3 per cent year-on-year increase and the highest absolute pre-tax profit among Nigeria’s largest lenders. The performance was supported by growth in net interest income, fee income, shareholders’ funds and a stronger loan portfolio.

Gross earnings rose by 6.1 per cent to ₦1.01 trillion, while net interest income increased by 7.3 per cent to ₦634.1 billion. Net fee and commission income recorded one of the strongest performances, rising 44.6 per cent year-on-year to ₦81 billion, reflecting increased earnings from transaction banking, digital services and card operations.

Zenith Bank also strengthened its balance sheet during the period, with customer deposits increasing by 7.9 per cent to ₦24.47 trillion and shareholders’ equity rising 16.3 per cent to ₦5.17 trillion. Gross loans expanded by 8.6 per cent to ₦12.04 trillion, while net loans grew by 13.2 per cent to ₦11.38 trillion.

The bank maintained healthy asset quality, with its non-performing loan ratio improving to 3.79 per cent from 4.70 per cent at the end of 2024, while retaining a loan-loss coverage ratio of 172.6 per cent.

Its strong financial position was further reflected in a capital adequacy ratio of about 25 per cent and a liquidity ratio of 71 per cent at the end of the 2025 financial year, both comfortably above regulatory requirements.

The bank’s performance has also translated into increased investor confidence, with its market capitalisation rising to about ₦5.18 trillion following a share price appreciation of more than 104 per cent as of July 23, 2026.

Beyond its financial results, Zenith Bank has accelerated its Pan-African expansion strategy. In April 2026, it completed the acquisition of Paramount Bank Kenya, establishing a foothold in East Africa. The bank also launched a subsidiary in Côte d’Ivoire, marking its entry into the Francophone West African market and providing access to the eight-member West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).

The expansion forms part of Zenith Bank’s broader international growth strategy, which also includes plans to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2027 to strengthen access to international capital and support cross-border financing opportunities.

The bank’s achievements have also attracted international recognition. At the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence, Zenith Bank was named Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank, retaining the national title for the second consecutive year.

Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, described the awards as a reflection of customers’ trust, the commitment of the bank’s workforce and its vision of building a globally competitive African financial institution.

Zenith Bank has also maintained its position as Nigeria’s number one bank by Tier-1 Capital for 17 consecutive years in The Banker’s Top 1000 World Banks ranking and has received multiple awards from The Banker and Global Finance over the years.

With sustained profitability, strong capital buffers, improving asset quality, expanding regional operations and growing international recognition, Zenith Bank continues to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading banking institutions while advancing its long-term growth strategy.
