The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media report alleging that suspected kidnappers were apprehended in Kanuyi Community, Simawa, clarifying that the individuals involved were serving police officers who were mistakenly identified as criminals by residents.
The Command said the clarification became necessary following the circulation of videos and photographs showing two men alleged to be kidnappers arrested by members of the community.
According to the Police, officers attached to the Simawa Division received information on June 1, 2026, that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by residents. Police operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene, where the individuals were rescued from an agitated crowd and taken into custody for identification and investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the two men were serving officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State.
The Command explained that the officers had mistakenly lost their way while returning from an official assignment in Sagamu and were subsequently suspected to be kidnappers by members of the public.
Further verification confirmed their identities through valid police identity cards, official deployment documents, uniforms and other service materials. Their parent formation also authenticated them as bona fide members of the Nigeria Police Force engaged in lawful duties.
Police authorities expressed concern that before officers arrived at the scene, the policemen had already been searched, photographed and video-recorded by residents, leading to the widespread circulation of misleading content online.
Although the officers escaped physical harm, the Command noted that the incident subjected them to unwarranted public suspicion and emotional distress despite their role in protecting lives and property.
The Police commended residents for their vigilance and willingness to support security efforts but cautioned against mob action and premature conclusions.
“The officers fortunately escaped physical harm, but the incident subjected them to needless public suspicion and emotional trauma despite their commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” the Command stated.
It stressed the need for the public to allow security agencies to verify facts before sharing information capable of endangering innocent persons or causing public panic.
The Command said the incident highlights the sacrifices and challenges faced daily by security personnel and underscores the importance of cooperation between citizens and law enforcement agencies in combating crime and misinformation.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Ogun State Police Command urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities while relying on verified information from official sources and avoiding the spread of unconfirmed reports that could damage reputations or undermine public confidence in security operations.
