Police Launch Probe as Cult Clash Leaves One Dead in Abeokuta

The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a suspected cult-related clash that claimed the life of one person in Abeokuta.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 3, 2026, along the Wasimi Ake–Ijemo Agbadu Road, reportedly involved members of rival cult groups who engaged in a violent confrontation, causing panic among residents.

In a statement, the Command clarified that the clash did not take place within the premises of Ake Palace and was not connected to any political gathering, including the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration held at the palace.

According to the police, the violence was strictly confined to the roadway between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, extending toward the Ijemo Agbadu axis.

Preliminary findings revealed that gunshots were heard during the clash, as suspected hoodlums attacked one another before fleeing through adjoining streets.

Police operatives from the Oke Itoku Division were swiftly deployed to the scene following distress calls. On arrival, they discovered a male victim, identified simply as “Stone,” with severe gunshot wounds.

The victim was immediately evacuated in collaboration with the state ambulance service to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, where he was later confirmed dead. His remains have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy.

The Command said it has launched an intensive manhunt for those responsible, adding that efforts are underway to track down and prosecute the perpetrators.

Authorities also confirmed that normalcy has been restored in the affected area, with increased security presence to prevent further violence.

Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant and to support ongoing investigations by providing credible and timely information to security agencies.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
