Ogun Police Pledge Protection for Petroleum, Gas Infrastructure

Ogun State Police Command has pledged to strengthen security around petroleum distribution facilities, gas infrastructure and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facilities to prevent vandalism, theft and other threats to critical energy assets.

Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni gave the assurance while receiving the State Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Dr Atilola Simeon Akinyemi, and members of his management team at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The meeting focused on improving operational coordination and intelligence sharing to protect energy infrastructure and support legitimate petroleum sector activities across the state.

Akinyemi outlined the authority’s regulatory responsibilities under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, stressing the importance of cooperation with security agencies to ensure compliance, protect investments and support economic growth.

He commended the police command for its support in securing petroleum-related operations and sought stronger collaboration on regulatory, technical and security matters.

Ojajuni said the police would provide appropriate security support within the law, particularly in addressing activities capable of undermining public safety and economic stability.

Drawing on his previous operational experience with the regulatory framework of the then Department of Petroleum Resources in Yola, Adamawa State, the commissioner stressed the role of law enforcement in deterring economic sabotage and creating a secure environment for legitimate business.

He added that protecting strategic energy assets was important to investor confidence, industrial productivity and economic development, particularly in Ogun State, a major industrial centre.

The commissioner also emphasised that cooperation between both institutions must respect their respective statutory responsibilities.

The police command urged industry operators and residents to report suspicious activities around petroleum facilities and other critical infrastructure through appropriate security channels.
