The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, in collaboration with Interferry, has commenced the practical phase of the Ferry Safety Development Programme, FSDP with the successful conduct of its first in-person training session at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos.
The training, which marked a significant milestone in the programme, brought together 50 participants for intensive hands-on learning focused on ferry design and construction, vessel safety standards, maintenance procedures, and operational best practices within the maritime sector.
The session was coordinated by Engr. Ukeme Sunday, who guided participants through practical modules designed to enhance technical competence and improve safety standards across the ferry and inland waterways industry.
A major highlight of the training was a technical session facilitated by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, who leveraged more than 40 years of experience in ferry design and construction to provide participants with practical insights into vessel construction standards, maintenance requirements, and key safety considerations in ferry operations.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the practical component was designed to complement the programme’s virtual mentoring and self-paced learning modules.
According to him, exposing participants to real-life operational environments and industry best practices is critical to equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to promote safer and more efficient waterways transportation.
Emmanuel noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader efforts to strengthen maritime capacity, enhance safety standards, and support the growth of the blue economy.
LASWA also expressed appreciation to Interferry for sponsoring the programme, Caverton Marine for hosting and facilitating the inaugural practical session, and the Lagos State Government for its continued support towards maritime safety and capacity development.
The authority described the Ferry Safety Development Programme as a landmark initiative and the first of its kind in Africa. The 18-month programme is designed to strengthen technical expertise, promote operational excellence, and foster a strong culture of safety across the ferry and inland waterways sector.
LASWA reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer waterways transportation while building the human capacity required to support the sustainable growth of Lagos’ maritime industry and blue economy.
