The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has received an engineering student who secured a ₦50 million venture capital grant at a national competition, describing the feat as a landmark achievement for the institution.
The meeting, held on Thursday at the university’s main campus in Ojo, brought together a delegation from the Epe Campus led by the Head of Campus, Elkanah Oyetunji.
The student, Goodness Ukwedje, a 300-level undergraduate in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, was commended for emerging successful from a pool of over 30,000 applicants nationwide.
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, K.F.K. Oyedeko, described the achievement as a rare distinction that highlights both the student’s innovation and the quality of training within the university.
Presenting his project, Ukwedje introduced ‘D-Rentals,’ a digital housing platform aimed at tackling accommodation fraud faced by students. He explained that the platform is designed to connect users with verified housing options, eliminating the risk of exploitation by fraudulent agents.
According to him, the application is currently under development and is expected to launch in the next academic session.
In her remarks, Olatunji-Bello praised the student’s ingenuity and encouraged him to utilise the grant effectively to scale the project.
“This achievement is a strong testament to the quality of education and mentorship we provide at Lagos State University,” she said, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to innovation and real-world problem solving.
She also commended the leadership of the Epe Campus and the Faculty of Engineering for their role in nurturing talent and promoting academic excellence.
The event featured the presentation of the award certificate to the Vice-Chancellor and was attended by senior academic staff and university officials.
