Students from Lagos State University (LASU) triumphed at the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) essay competition for tertiary institution students, sweeping all top positions. The event, held to commemorate World Environmental Day, saw LASU students outshine their peers from various institutions across Lagos State.

The event, held to commemorate World Environmental Day, saw LASU students outshine their peers from various institutions across Lagos State.
Themed “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” the competition featured 174 participants who debated the Lagos State experience and proposed innovative solutions. LASU boasted the highest number of entries, with 73 submissions, nine of which made it to the top 20.
In a remarkable feat, LASU students secured the first through fourth positions at the awards ceremony held on Thursday at LASEPA Headquarters, Alausa, Ikeja. The winners are:
- Sowemimo Efunjola Olumayowa (Medicine & Surgery) – 1st position
- Bieni Precious Chinomso (History & International Relations) – 2nd position
- Hamzat Kabir Olorunwa (Physiology) – 3rd position
- Adebiyi Omotola Elizabeth (Mechanical Engineering) – 4th position
The first prize winner, Sowemimo Efunjola Olumayowa, received N500,000 in cash, an award, and a LASEPA Ambassador status for 2024. The second position earned Bieni Precious Chinomso N300,000, an award, and a LASEPA Ambassador status. Hamzat Kabir Olorunwa, who secured third place, received N200,000, an award, and a LASEPA Ambassador status, while Adebiyi Omotola Elizabeth was awarded N100,000, an award, and a LASEPA Ambassador status for fourth place.
The Acting Dean of Students Affairs Division, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, led the students to the grand finale, while Prof. Oseni Afisi, Director of the Directorate of Special Interventions, coordinated LASU’s participation.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello congratulated the students on their victory and encouraged them to continue upholding the university’s reputation. She assured them of the university’s support in future competitions.
