The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, on Sunday joined the Philippine Consulate and the Filipino Association in Lagos (FAL) to commemorate the 127th Independence Anniversary of the Republic of the Philippines.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, in her remarks, highlighted the importance of culture as a source of pride and identity, noting that cultural events like this foster unity and shared values across communities.
She reiterated the commitment of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration to partnerships that enhance cultural exchange and promote tourism development in Lagos.
“Tourism remains a melting pot for Lagos State’s cultural heritage and economic growth,” she said.
In his opening address, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of the Philippines in Lagos, Hon. Emmanuel Akpakwu, MFR, described Philippine Independence Day as a time to reflect on the resilience and enduring spirit of the Filipino people.
He emphasised the event’s significance as both a cultural celebration and a platform for building strategic partnerships.
Akpakwu announced a major collaboration with Filipino automaker Francisco Motors to establish an Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly plant and charging station infrastructure in Nigeria.
He also pointed to vast opportunities for cooperation between Nigeria and the Philippines in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, modular housing, digital services, green energy, and education, calling ministries, investors, and entrepreneurs to engage the Philippine Consulate, he affirmed that “Manila and Lagos will rise together.”
The Honorary Consul expressed deep gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its support and participation in marking the milestone.
