Lagos Police Targets Early Prevention of Cultism, Drug Abuse Among Students

The Lagos State Police Command is strengthening early prevention efforts against cultism, drug abuse and other social vices by engaging students on responsible decision-making and positive values.

The Command, through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, POCACOV, sensitised about 400 students of the Police Children School, Ikeja, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, under the theme, “Right Choices, Great Future.”

The programme focused on equipping the students with the awareness and values needed to resist negative peer pressure, make responsible choices and avoid behaviours that could jeopardise their future.

Speaking at the programme, a POCACOV member, Henry Bassey, urged the students to be law-abiding and maintain open communication with their parents, teachers and other trusted adults, particularly when faced with threats or troubling experiences.

A mental health expert from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr Hezekiah Akinlade, educated the students on the dangers of drug and substance abuse and encouraged them to resist negative peer pressure and make healthy choices.

The POCACOV Coordinator, Lagos State, SP Olivia A. Ugochukwu, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, urged the students to remain focused on their education, choose their friends wisely, respect their parents and teachers, obey the law and avoid behaviours capable of compromising their future.

The Command said the engagement formed part of its preventive approach to combating cultism, drug abuse and other social vices through early intervention, awareness and positive value formation among young people.
