The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a viral video showing a police officer struggling to arrest a bus conductor who allegedly obstructed traffic and resisted arrest in the Ikorodu area of the state.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command said its attention was drawn to the circulating footage, which captured chaotic scenes involving a commercial bus and its conductor.
According to the police, the incident began when the driver of the bus deliberately blocked traffic, preventing other road users and public officials, including Police and LASTMA officers, from carrying out their duties.
The Command explained that officers moved in to arrest the bus conductor for obstruction, but the situation escalated when the conductor allegedly stripped himself naked in an attempt to evade arrest. The viral video was recorded during this confrontation.
Despite the conduct of the suspect, the Lagos Police Command said the officer seen in the video has been identified and is currently under investigation to determine whether his actions were appropriate.
The bus conductor has also been contacted and is expected to appear before the Commissioner of Police on Monday for further questioning. The bus involved has been impounded pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, appealed to members of the public to remain law-abiding and report any violation of their rights by police officers, assuring that such complaints will be addressed promptly and fairly.
He, however, cautioned against the “unnecessary dramatisation” targeted at the officer in the video, reminding citizens that resisting lawful arrest is a criminal offence.
“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to assure the public that this matter will be thoroughly investigated and justice will be done,” the statement added.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring that the conduct of its personnel aligns with the law and upholds transparency and accountability.”
