The Lagos State Government has recognised frontline workers and institutions for their contributions to preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence across the state.

The awards were presented at the Governor’s Commendation Night organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) as part of activities marking the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

The event brought together government officials, law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, civil society organisations, development partners and survivors to recognise efforts to strengthen the state’s response to domestic and sexual violence.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, received the Lagos State Champion Against SGBV Award for his support and contributions towards the prevention and elimination of sexual and gender-based violence in the state.

Representing the governor at the ceremony, Mrs Tawakalitu Toriola, Founder of Oasis Mediation and Solicitors, commended frontline workers and institutional partners for efforts to protect survivors, hold perpetrators accountable and promote safer communities.

She said the recognition should also encourage all sectors of society to take responsibility for ending domestic and sexual violence.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, who was represented by the Director of Advisory Services, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mrs Folashade Anibaba-Bossman, commended the awardees and partners for their commitment to strengthening the state’s response.

He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among government institutions, law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, civil society organisations and other stakeholders in protecting survivors and ensuring access to justice.

The Executive Secretary of the DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said combating gender-based violence required a coordinated approach linking police units, health facilities, the justice system, social services and civil society, with survivors remaining at the centre of interventions.

Among the institutions recognised, the Festac Family Support Unit, represented by ASP Okanlawon Yetunde, was named Most Responsive Family Support Unit, while Family Social Services, Kosofe Local Government, represented by Mrs Abosede Owovoriho, received the Family Social Service of the Year award.

Ita Elewa Primary Health Centre, represented by Dr Osagie Ehimeme, was named Most Responsive Primary Health Care facility, while Somolu General Hospital, represented by its MD/CEO, Dr Adesina Ayodele, was recognised as Most Responsive General Hospital.

In the non-governmental sector, the Walk Against Rape and Indirect Discrimination Foundation (WARAID), represented by Mrs Bunmi Onilude, received the NGO of the Year award.
