The Lagos Lagoon came alive from October 3 to 5, 2025, as electric powerboats raced across its glistening waters in Africa’s first-ever E1 Lagos Grand Prix, powered by First Bank of Nigeria.
The three-day championship, which drew thousands of spectators to the Victoria Island waterfront, marked a major milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement. The E1 Grand Prix, featuring electric-powered boats, showcased the potential of clean energy in motorsports and beyond.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a goodwill message at the opening ceremony, described the event as a bold statement of intent by Nigeria and Lagos. He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, First Bank of Nigeria, and other partners for their collaboration in hosting the world-class championship.
“The E1 Powerboat Series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation,” the President said. “This championship is not just a thrilling spectacle on water but a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who led the regatta that opened the event, said the championship was a proud moment for Lagos and a demonstration of its growing capacity to host global events.
“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism and the Spirit of Lagos,” he said. “It shows our capacity to host world-class events and underscores our commitment to sustainability.”
The waterfront and fan zones were filled with excitement as visitors from across the world, including sports stars and investors, joined Lagos residents to experience the unique fusion of sports, technology, and culture. Former football star Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa, was among the international figures in attendance.
Acting Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at First Bank, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said the sponsorship reflected the bank’s tradition of innovation and social responsibility.
“We are a heritage bank that has been around for 131 years, and throughout those years we have constantly renewed ourselves,” he said. “When this opportunity came, who else could bring the first E1 GP to Nigeria but First Bank? We are proud to have presented Lagos and Nigeria to the world.”
Ijabiyi also noted that the event aligned with the bank’s environmental sustainability goals.
“This race is a net-zero emitter. We are strong on sustaining the environment and supporting a cleaner, greener future,” he said.
The finale on Sunday saw Team Brazil, piloted by Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin, emerge winners ahead of Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba.
With the success of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, Lagos has further strengthened its reputation as a leading destination for innovation and global sporting excellence, while First Bank reaffirmed its role as a driver of progress, sustainability, and national pride.
