AUATON LAGOS STATE COUNCIL MEETS MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT OVER ARREST OF DRIVERS

The Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria, AUATON, Lagos State Council has met with officials of the Ministry of Transportation over the recent arrest of some Uber drivers in Lagos.

In a statement made available to newsmen, AUATON Lagos state PRO, Comrade Iwindoye Steven said the State Council strongly opposes the harsh treatment inflicted upon its members who abide by the law and urgently request that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu effect the release of all impounded vehicles belonging to its members.

Comrade Steven explained that the the Union requested that the Ministry of Transportation stop the arrest of its members, while also emphasizing that if Uber is to face closure due to non-compliance with the Ministry’s directives, innocent drivers must not be penalized.

“We are advising all our members in Lagos to switch to an alternative app and avoid using Uber until they resolve their issues with the Lagos State government.

As a union, we believe that the government should direct its attention to the Uber office and its servers through the NCC instead of troubling our innocent members, he opined.”

Earlier, representative of the Ministry of Transportation said the arrest was made because Uber failed to comply with the terms outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) they had previously agreed upon with the government, specifically regarding API and data sharing.
