The Anambra State Government has set up a high-powered committee to recover government lands that have been illegally occupied, grabbed, or misused across the state.
The decision was taken at the 25th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council, ANSEC, held at the Lighthouse in Awka, as part of ongoing efforts by the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to strengthen land administration and protect public assets.
Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, who briefed journalists after the meeting, said the move was aimed at safeguarding government property and boosting internally generated revenue for the development of the state.
Mefor stated that the committee has been mandated to identify, recover, and repossess all encroached government lands, stressing that the government would no longer tolerate illegal occupation of its assets.
According to him, the committee will work closely with relevant agencies, stakeholders, and security operatives to ensure effective enforcement and recovery.
He outlined the committee’s responsibilities to include conducting a comprehensive audit of all government lands in Anambra State; identifying and verifying lands that have been encroached upon, grabbed, or misused; collaborating with security agencies to remove illegal occupants and structures; ensuring that recovered lands are put to use for the benefit of citizens; and recommending measures to prevent future encroachment.
The state government also appealed to residents to support the initiative by providing useful information on illegal activities involving government lands to the appropriate authorities.
Mefor added that the committee is expected to carry out its assignment diligently to ensure that recovered lands contribute meaningfully to Anambra State’s development.
