Two contestants, Pearl and Margaret, have become the first to exit the maiden edition of MasterChef Nigeria, following a dramatic opening episode that saw a double elimination.
The competition, which features 10 home cooks battling for the grand prize of 73 million naira, began on a tense note as judges Chef Eros and Chef Stone introduced a surprise black apron challenge on the very first day.
Contestants were tasked with recreating a dish inspired by someone who shaped their culinary journey, using a photograph as their guide, within 60 minutes.
Pearl, a 30-year-old from Delta State, attempted a bold menu of pan-seared catfish, garri polenta, and palm nut velouté (banga soup).
However, in a major setback, her dish was not completed in time, leaving her with nothing to present to the judges and making her the first contestant to be eliminated.
In a further twist, the judges announced a second elimination despite only nine dishes being presented.
Margaret, 42, who drew inspiration from her employers, prepared egusi soup with semo, sautéed spinach, fried plantain, and okra. While ambitious, her dish was criticised for lacking cohesion.
Chef Stone advised her to simplify her approach, noting that her attempt to impress compromised the balance of flavours.Elsewhere, the episode delivered standout performances from several contestants.
David, 24, emerged as the top performer with his innovative egusi purée served with eba, ugwu oil, and suya, earning the “dish of the day” title.
Favy, 26, also impressed the judges with her elevated Warri coconut rice paired with Ethiopian-inspired stew and sautéed prawns, while Isabella, 39, received praise for her Kartoffelsuppe, a German potato soup that judge Chef Eros described as restaurant-worthy.
Other contestants, including Derry, Demilade, Loye, Preye, and Fads, delivered mixed performances, with some earning commendation for creativity and others receiving critiques on execution and balance.
With two contestants already out, the competition is intensifying as the remaining cooks continue their quest for the inaugural MasterChef Nigeria title.
The show airs weekly on Africa Magic Showcase and Africa Magic Family, with additional rebroadcasts scheduled later in the week.
