The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Oyo/Osun Area Command has commenced an investigation into a fatal incident that occurred on March 15, 2026, along the Osogbo axis, following the circulation of a video on social media and reports from the Osun State Police Command.
In a statement, the Command said preliminary findings indicate that its patrol team was on routine enforcement duty aimed at intercepting suspected smuggled foreign-used vehicles, popularly known as “Tokunbo,” when the incident occurred.
The operation, it noted, was part of its statutory mandate to curb smuggling and enforce trade regulations.
The Command expressed regret over the loss of life recorded during the operation and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, stressing that it recognizes the sanctity of human life and is committed to professional conduct in all enforcement activities.
According to the statement, a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including a review of the roles of two officers identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel.
The probe will assess whether their actions complied with the Service’s Rules of Engagement.
The NCS also called for a coordinated and objective inquiry involving relevant security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, noting that forensic evidence, such as the source of the ammunition discharged would be crucial to establishing accountability.
While appealing for calm, the Command urged members of the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could heighten tensions within the community or among security agencies.
It assured that the outcome of the investigation would determine appropriate actions in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
