The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, has intensified safety monitoring and operational oversight across inland waterways to ensure the protection of lives and property during the yuletide season, as passenger traffic increases.
Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the agency has activated enhanced real-time surveillance across major ferry routes, jetties, and terminals, working in close collaboration with the Marine Police, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and other safety agencies.
According to him, LASWA has stepped up compliance enforcement to ensure that only certified boats operated by licensed captains ply the waterways, with strict adherence to safety regulations, including mandatory use of life jackets and compliance with approved passenger capacity.
Emmanuel explained that the Authority’s Waterways Monitoring and Data Management Centre is operating at full capacity to enable swift response to incidents, while Search and Rescue teams and the LASWA floating clinic remain on heightened standby throughout the festive period.
Speaking on the growing influence of the “Detty December” season, Emmanuel said LASWA has leveraged the increased social and tourism activities to promote water transportation as a safe, efficient, and enjoyable option for mobility and leisure.
He noted that the agency has supported the surge in water-based tourism by ensuring seamless coordination among commercial and private boat operators, as well as government-owned ferry services operated by LagFerry and the Omi Bus Ferry.
The Special Adviser added that LASWA has also encouraged leisure cruises, waterfront events, and improved island connectivity, describing these initiatives as key drivers of job creation, commercial growth, and revenue generation within the state’s Blue Economy.
According to him, these efforts are gradually deepening public confidence in water transportation while unlocking its full economic potential for Lagos.
As Lagosians celebrate the festive season, Emmanuel urged residents and visitors to prioritize safety when using the waterways by patronising government-approved boats, wearing life jackets, and complying with instructions from boat operators and safety officials.
He reaffirmed LASWA’s commitment to maintaining safe and efficient waterways, stressing that the Authority remains focused on positioning Lagos as a smart city and a leading hub for Blue Economy development.
