LASU Explores Solar Energy Innovation Through Nanotechnology Research Lecture

Research into nanostructured materials that could improve solar-cell efficiency featured at Lagos State University, LASU, as the institution hosted a South African physicist to discuss advances in renewable energy technology.

The guest lecture, organised by the Faculty of Science on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, focused on how nanoscale materials can enhance photocurrent collection in thin-film polymer solar cells, an area of research with potential applications in sustainable energy.

The lecture, titled “Nanostructured Materials as a Mechanism for Collection of Photocurrents in Thin Film Polymer Solar Cells,” was delivered by Professor Genene Tessema Mola of the Department of Physics, School of Chemistry and Physics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

During the presentation at the S. L. Edu Lecture Theatre, LASU’s main campus in Ojo, Mola explained how nanostructured materials could improve light absorption and photocurrent collection, potentially enhancing the efficiency of solar cells.

He also highlighted the potential of polymer-based solar cells as lightweight, flexible and potentially cost-effective alternatives to conventional solar technologies, noting the importance of materials science in developing practical renewable energy solutions.

The physicist also spoke about the value of international academic engagements in promoting knowledge exchange and cultural understanding, recounting how his experience in Nigeria had challenged some negative perceptions he previously held about the country.

Speaking at the event, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, said the university was committed to strengthening research, innovation and international academic collaboration.

Her welcome address, delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Anthony Ojekale, emphasised the importance of engagements with international scholars in advancing scientific knowledge and creating opportunities for research partnerships.

Earlier, the convener of the Faculty Lecture Series and Research Partnership Committee, Professor Akintayo Ogundajo, presented the guest lecturer’s citation.

The university said the engagement provided an opportunity for academics and students to explore contemporary scientific developments and research approaches relevant to renewable energy, technological innovation and sustainable development.

The lecture was organised by the Faculty of Science’s Guest Lecture Series and Research Partnership Committee as part of efforts to promote scientific education, research collaboration and international academic exchange.
