FerrySafe Advances to Survey, Inspection Training After Module 5 on Safety Management Systems

The FerrySafe Programme has successfully concluded Module 5: Safety Management Systems, marking another significant milestone in its mission to strengthen safety standards and operational excellence across inland waterways in Nigeria and West Africa.

The September 2026 module combined international mentorship with practical field-based learning, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of modern safety management systems and their application in ferry operations.

A major highlight of the programme was the “Ask the Expert” session held on September 23, 2026, featuring Mr. Mike Corrigan, Chief Executive Officer of Interferry, who shared valuable insights on global safety governance, risk management, and operational leadership within the international ferry industry.

His engagement offered mentees a unique opportunity to learn directly from one of the world’s leading maritime safety experts.

The training culminated in a practical onboard session on September 30, 2026, facilitated by Mr. Effiong Abasiubong and Mr. Samuel Nwosu of Coastal Maritime Academy Lagos.

During the exercise, mentees conducted live safety management drills aboard two 60-seater passenger ferries, MF EJIRIN and MF ITESIWAJU, gaining hands-on experience in safety procedures, emergency preparedness, and operational protocols.

The FerrySafe Programme expressed its profound appreciation to Hon. Dr. Ladi Balogun, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAGFERRY, for providing the vessels used during the practical training, a contribution that significantly enhanced the learning experience.

Special recognition was also extended to Mrs. Shari Corrigan, Director of Conference and Finance at Interferry and Executive Sponsor of FerrySafe, for her continued support and commitment to advancing ferry safety initiatives.

The programme further acknowledged the unwavering support of Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, Special Adviser on Blue Economy to the Governor of Lagos State, whose dedication to the development of the state’s blue economy continues to create opportunities for capacity building and safety enhancement.

The organisers also commended Coastal Maritime Academy Lagos, LAGFERRY vessel crew members, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and the Lagos State Government for their collective contributions toward promoting safety excellence on inland waterways.

In addition, the FerrySafe Team Lagos, Nigeria, received commendation for its dedication and professionalism in coordinating the successful delivery of the programme.

Speaking on the completion of the module, programme coordinators reaffirmed their commitment to raising safety standards within the maritime sector through continuous professional development, international collaboration, and practical training.

With the successful completion of Module 5, FerrySafe now moves into Module 6: Survey and Inspection, scheduled throughout October 2026.

The module will feature expert mentorship from internationally recognised surveyors affiliated with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), further equipping participants with critical knowledge and skills in vessel inspection, compliance, and maritime safety assurance.

As the programme progresses, FerrySafe remains committed to fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and operational excellence across Africa’s inland waterways sector.
