The race for the MasterChef Nigeria crown intensified as contestant Derry became the latest home cook to exit the competition following a demanding Top Five pressure challenge centered on Nigerian Buka classics.
The episode challenged contestants to reimagine popular street food and Buka-inspired dishes, transforming familiar favourites into fine-dining creations while preserving their authentic flavours and cultural essence. Renowned chef, Bukie Akinmade, joined the judging panel for the challenge.
Determined to showcase her cultural heritage through food, Derry presented dishes inspired by tradition and tribal influences. However, the judges felt her execution fell short of the standard expected at this advanced stage of the competition, leading to her elimination.
Derry was joined in the bottom three by contestants Favy and Fads. Despite holding an immunity pin, Favy opted not to use it, expressing confidence in her dish. However, her undercooked Dubai Pistachio Puff Puff landed her among the weakest performers of the challenge.
Fads also faced difficulties after time constraints affected her cooking. In a dramatic moment, she accidentally placed her hands in hot oil while preparing her dishes. Despite the setback, she completed the challenge, and the judges praised the quality of her chicken, ultimately saving her from elimination.
At the other end of the leaderboard, David and Isabella impressed the judges with standout performances.
Isabella earned praise for her ability to interpret the challenge brief, successfully elevating street food while retaining its authentic character. Her flavours and presentation secured her place among the challenge’s top performers.
David emerged as the star of the day, impressing the judges with the visual appeal, balance, and depth of flavour in his dishes. His ability to elevate traditional street food concepts while staying true to their roots earned him the coveted Dish of the Day title.
With Derry’s departure, the competition now moves into its final stages as the Top Four contestants prepare for another high-stakes challenge. Next week, the remaining cooks will be tasked with creating Afro-Italian dishes, with a major prize at stake as they battle for a place in the grand finale.
