The competition intensified on MasterChef Nigeria this week as the remaining contestants faced a demanding double challenge that tested both their culinary instincts and creativity, ultimately leading to the elimination of contestant Preye.
Following the departure of Demilade in the previous episode, seven home cooks returned to the kitchen knowing that the margin for error was becoming increasingly slim.
The episode began with a Blind Taste Test, a challenge that required contestants to identify various fruits and vegetables using only their sense of taste. While the task proved daunting for some, David, who had earlier expressed doubts about his palate, rose to the occasion alongside Loye and Favy. The trio successfully identified the ingredients and secured immunity from elimination.
Their success left Preye, Derry, Fads and Isabella to battle for survival in the competition.
The contestants then faced their first Mystery Box Challenge, where they were required to create standout dishes under pressure while demonstrating creativity, technical ability and composure.
After tasting the dishes, the judges placed Isabella and Preye in the bottom two, setting the stage for a tense elimination decision.
Preye presented a Roasted Sirloin with Butternut Squash, a dish that initially impressed the judges with its presentation. The plate was praised for its visual appeal, with comparisons drawn to dishes served in French bistros.
However, the fortunes of the dish changed dramatically during the tasting.
When judge Chef Eros cut into the steak, he discovered that it was undercooked, a critical error in a competition where precision is paramount.
Despite the promise shown in the dish, the flaw proved costly, bringing Preye’s MasterChef Nigeria journey to an end.
Meanwhile, Derry continued her impressive run in the competition, earning the coveted Dish of the Day title with a well-executed meal that impressed the judges with its presentation, flavour balance and technical excellence.
The contestant, popularly known as “Daring Derry,” once again demonstrated confidence under pressure, further strengthening her position as one of the competition’s standout performers.
Fads also survived elimination with her innovative Plantain Tacos, which showcased creativity and secured her place in the competition. While the judges acknowledged her effort, Chef Eros challenged her to raise her standards as the competition enters a more demanding phase.
“This is the MasterChef kitchen and I expect MasterChef results,” he told her.
With only a handful of contestants remaining, the competition continues to intensify as each challenge carries higher stakes.
The pressure is expected to rise even further next week as the contestants face one of the most feared disciplines in the culinary world, baking.
Special guest judge Chef Tosan will join the competition to oversee the challenge, which will test contestants’ precision, patience and technical skills.
Unlike traditional cooking, where improvisation can often rescue a dish, baking leaves little room for error, making the upcoming episode a crucial test for the remaining hopefuls.
