The Lagos State Police Command has recorded major operational breakthroughs in May 2026, including the foiling of a kidnap attempt, arrests linked to armed robbery, cultism, vehicle theft, conspiracy, and the recovery of firearms, stolen vehicles, and cash connected to criminal activities across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this during a press briefing on the Command’s achievements for the month.
According to the Police Commissioner, the Command arrested 10 suspects within the period under review and recovered several exhibits, including AK-47 rifles, submachine guns, locally made pistols, magazines, live ammunition, vehicles, and other dangerous weapons.
One of the major operations involved the foiling of a kidnap attempt at Jakande Estate Gate in Ejigbo on May 24, 2026.
Police said operatives acted on credible intelligence concerning a notorious kidnapping gang allegedly targeting a businessman in the area. The gang reportedly specialised in kidnapping wealthy individuals and travelling into Lagos to carry out operations.
The Command stated that upon arrival at the scene, the suspects opened fire on police operatives, leading to a gun duel during which four gang members were neutralised, while another suspect escaped with gunshot wounds.
Recovered exhibits included one Toyota Sienna vehicle, an AK-47 rifle with magazines and ammunition, an SMG rifle, and vehicle keys. One police inspector sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and is reportedly responding to treatment.
The Command also announced the arrest of a suspected vehicle thief, identified as Akintayo Wasiu, in Ibadan, Oyo State, over the theft of a Toyota Hiace bus. Police said the suspect allegedly stole the vehicle from his employer, altered its documents, and changed his phone number in a bid to evade arrest before he was tracked and apprehended.
In another operation, police operatives recovered a locally made double-barrel pistol from the residence of Waliu Olaleye, described as a principal leader of the Aiye confraternity in Igando.
The Command further disclosed the arrest of Chibuzor Mogbo in connection with the alleged theft of Premium Motor Spirit valued at over ₦1 billion belonging to MEA Energy.
Police said the suspect was arrested in Delta State after fleeing Lagos, adding that cash and properties worth over ₦300 million linked to the crime were recovered. Efforts are ongoing to arrest another suspect, identified as Jessica Anyincha.
The police also uncovered an alleged staged kidnapping involving Adamu Abdullahi and accomplices who reportedly attempted to extort ₦1.5 million from his employer using a fake abduction video.
Investigators said inconsistencies in the footage prompted further interrogation, leading to confessions from the suspects. The Command recovered ₦490,000 allegedly diverted by the victim.
Other operations led to the arrest of suspected car vandals in Bariga, the recovery of firearms during stop-and-search operations in Shasha, and the seizure of a locally fabricated Beretta pistol abandoned by fleeing hoodlums in Ikola.
CP Fatai said the achievements reflected the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies adopted by the Command.
He assured residents that there would be no hiding place for criminals in Lagos and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support policing efforts across the state.
