FirstBank, Visa Launch Naira Debit Card to Boost Cashless Payments in Nigeria

First Bank of Nigeria has partnered with Visa to launch a new Naira Visa Debit Card aimed at expanding access to electronic payments and accelerating Nigeria’s transition to a cashless economy.

The newly introduced card is designed to provide everyday consumers with a reliable payment solution for routine local and international transactions, offering seamless access across Point of Sale (POS) terminals, ATMs, and online platforms powered by Visa’s global payment network.

According to the bank, the initiative is targeted at widening financial inclusion by making digital payment solutions more affordable, accessible, and convenient for millions of Nigerians across different economic segments.

The launch comes amid ongoing efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria to encourage greater adoption of electronic payment channels as part of Nigeria’s broader cashless policy drive.

Speaking on the development, Group Executive, eBusiness and Retail Products at FirstBank, Chuma Ezirim, said the new card was designed to simplify daily transactions for customers while supporting the country’s growing digital economy.

“Everyday transactions should be simple, secure, and rewarding. The Naira Visa Debit Card is designed to make life easier for our customers, whether they are paying for groceries, settling utility bills, or shopping online,” Ezirim said.

He added that the initiative would help more Nigerians transition confidently from cash-based transactions to digital payments while empowering communities through improved financial inclusion.

Also speaking, Vice President and Cluster Head, West Africa, Visa, Andrew Uaboi, described the partnership as part of efforts to build a more inclusive and efficient payments ecosystem across Nigeria.

“A strong payments ecosystem is one that works for everyone. The Naira Visa Debit Card extends reliable electronic payment access to everyday Nigerian consumers,” Uaboi stated.

He noted that the addition of the new debit card further strengthens FirstBank’s card portfolio, which already includes credit cards and premium lifestyle payment solutions tailored to different customer categories.

FirstBank disclosed that the Naira Visa Debit Card is now available to eligible account holders through its branches nationwide.
