GTCO Backs Sports Development as Lagos STL Wins 2026 NPA Lagos Polo Tournament

Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, GTCO has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development in Nigeria and across Africa following the conclusion of the 2026 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament, where Lagos STL clinched the prestigious Majekodunmi Cup.

The tournament, hosted at the historic Lagos Polo Club from January 27 to February 15, attracted elite local and international teams, dignitaries, corporate leaders and thousands of spectators, further cementing its reputation as one of Africa’s premier polo events.

In a thrilling Majekodunmi Cup final, Lagos STL defeated Shoreline/A1 10–7 in a fiercely contested match decided by a late goal. The victory capped an impressive campaign for STL, who also won the Independence Cup, Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup and the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup.

Speaking on the significance of the tournament, GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje, said the event represents more than sport, noting that it promotes teamwork, discipline, fair play and excellence. He added that the platform also showcases Nigeria and Africa to a global audience, reinforcing the continent’s growing presence on the world stage.

Lagos STL captain, Yasin Amusan, who emerged Most Valuable Player of the Majekodunmi Cup final, attributed the team’s success to resilience, preparation and unity, while acknowledging the support of fans throughout the competition.

Despite finishing as runners-up in the Majekodunmi and Independence Cups, Shoreline/A1 secured the Oba of Lagos Cup earlier in the tournament. Other highlights included Lagos Art Hotel’s victory in the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup and Kano Golden Alchemy’s triumph in the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup.

Founded in 1904, the Lagos Polo Club remains one of Africa’s oldest sporting institutions, with its annual international tournament continuing to serve as a major cultural and sporting landmark. GTCO’s sustained sponsorship underscores its broader investment in initiatives that promote excellence, community engagement and global recognition.
