The Federal Government is planning dedicated Energy Zones to deliver stable 24 hour electricity supply to homes, businesses and industries in Nigeria’s highest demand areas.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this during a strategic closed door meeting with the leadership of selected electricity distribution companies (DisCos) on the proposed Energy Zones.

The proposed zones will cover the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor and Enugu-Port Harcourt axis, with the government seeking to strengthen distribution infrastructure and ensure electricity supply keeps pace with demand in the areas.

Tegbe said the constraints in the power sector extend beyond generation and transmission to the amount of electricity that can be taken up and delivered through the distribution network.

He said the Energy Zones were intended to address the distribution gap, unlock commercial and industrial demand, and strengthen the revenue and collection capacity of DisCos.

The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to developing infrastructure in high demand areas as part of efforts to improve electricity reliability and support economic growth, industrialisation and job creation.

The meeting was attended by the leadership of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Eko Power, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Sahara Energy Group.
