Lagos State University, LASU has moved 267 places to 493rd globally in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, while retaining its position as the top-ranked university in West Africa.
The latest ranking, announced at the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan, placed LASU among 2,016 institutions from 110 countries.
The university’s global position improved from 760th in 2025 and 799th in 2024, representing a 306-place rise over the two-year period.
LASU has maintained the No. 1 position in West Africa in every UI GreenMetric ranking since it joined the assessment in 2022, making the 2026 result its fifth consecutive regional lead.
The UI GreenMetric ranking assesses universities across areas including setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation, education, and governance and digitalisation.
LASU’s latest performance reflects its ongoing sustainability initiatives and institutional efforts in environmental responsibility, innovation and sustainable operations.
In August 2026, the university also had its National and Regional Coordinatorship of the UI GreenMetric network renewed and was elevated to Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The latest ranking follows contributions from the university management, staff, students, units and committees involved in its sustainability agenda.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, congratulated the LASU community and commended those involved in advancing the university’s sustainability efforts.
